China is Australia's largest two-way trading partner in goods and services (valued at $150.0 billion in 2015-16, up 4.4 per cent on the previous year). China is our largest source of imports, valued at $64.1 billion in 2015-16.

The China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) entered into force on 20 December 2015. The Agreement has already enhanced the growing trade and investment relationship between our highly complementary economies.

Importers can now benefit from the ChAFTA agreement as well.

Increasing numbers of Australian businesses are importing from the Chinese market with great success. However – like all cross border commercial activities – the benefits of doing business in China are coupled with risks. These risks can, however, be mitigated through education and preparation before looking to import from the China market.

The ECA’s Importing from China workshops are aimed at giving Australian importers a thorough overview of how to directly import from the Chinese market.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to importing from China
  • Key market opportunities for importing from China
  • Doing business in China
  • Finding the right suppliers in China
  • Cultural Understanding & business etiquette
  • Importing products from China to Australia-the process
  • The Chinese and Australian legal environment – the bigger picture
  • ChAFTA summary and the benefits for importers
  • Useful contacts
  • Doing business in China checklist
